Montgomery ISD

Welcome to the Montgomery Athletics Show, featuring MISD Athletic Director, Coach Brad LaPlante. The show highlights the district's commitment to student success through athletics, promoting well-being and life skills like teamwork and leadership.

Coach LaPlante's Transition to Montgomery ISD involved moving from Hutto after 11 years, a decision driven by a long-standing family desire to retire near Lake Conroe. With both his sons now playing college football, the job opening aligned with a different life stage. He started at Montgomery on January 15th, describing the whirlwind transition as stressful but ultimately "God's plan".

In his role overseeing a multi-campus district, Coach LaPlante emphasizes forward-thinking to impact all stakeholders positively. He praises the leadership at both Lake Creek and Montgomery High School, as well as Superintendent Dr. Mark Ruffin, who understands the academic and athletic connection. The district boasts a strong community and hard-working students, leading to numerous playoff teams, including the Lake Creek boys' soccer team making the semifinals and the Lake Creek softball team winning the 5A state title, ranked number one in the state and five in the nation.

Coach LaPlante experienced the MoTown Showdown rivalry firsthand, attending the basketball games on January 14th before his official start. He observed kids playing hard and mutual respect among players and parents, even after games. While the rivalry may have "tapered down a little bit" since Lake Creek was built in 2019, it varies by sport, with the upcoming football game expected to be intense. Despite on-field competition, there's a level of respect among coaches, who know how hard the other side works and even support each other in playoffs.

The district is undergoing significant construction initiatives, including a stadium renovation funded by a 2019 bond. The stadium is flipping home and visitor sides, will feature new press boxes, and will have a total capacity of 10,042 seats, with expectations to host playoff games. Other improvements include a new parking lot, three entrances, and upgraded locker rooms and concessions. Additionally, three tracks have been restriped, new turf installed at the stadium, and seven campuses currently have construction underway. The community's "buy-in" is evident through voting for the bond and Proposition A, which allowed for hiring more staff and raises. Nearly 50% of UIL-aged students participate in UIL sports, reflecting strong community involvement and growth that could lead to schools becoming 6A in the future.

A new district-wide weekly show/podcast is being launched to showcase all sports, coaches, and kids. The goal is to allow head coaches to discuss their programs, highlight student achievements for recruiting, and recognize students for academic success or strong performance.

Coach LaPlante chose Montgomery ISD because its social media messages promoting "be premier," "home of state champions," and "the best of the best" resonated with his focus on the process of excellence. He felt the district valued "how important everything and everyone is," including his role and academics for student futures. He found the district's caring, charismatic, and hardworking people to be a great match, noting the responsiveness of district leadership in supporting staff and students.

His initial months involved an "observation mode," watching practices and games across middle and high schools. The upcoming year will focus on "coaching the coaches" and initiating new programs, guided by his philosophy to "meet them where they are". He prioritizes being present and visible to offer support and build relationships, evaluating coaches beyond just game day.

Host Ty Gipson is joined by special guest Krista Spring to discuss her personal journey of overcoming challenges and channeling adversity into action.

Episode Highlights:

  • Meet Krista Spring: Krista, married to Gary with three sons – Grant, Garrison, and Graylan – shares her story. While her husband Gary was a college quarterback, Krista was noted as the athlete in the family, excelling as a track star and cheerleader.
  • A Mother's Worst Nightmare: Krista recounts the devastating phone call she received on Good Friday, informing her that her son, Graylan, had been in a severe car accident and airlifted to Conroe Trauma Center. Graylan was a passenger in a car that collided with an 18-wheeler, sustaining blunt force trauma to the head. Despite initial brainstem activity, Graylan was sadly declared brain dead on January 21st, 2023.
  • The Spirit of Graylan: Learn about Graylan's incredible personality and impact on those around him. He was known for his jovial nature, always brightening people's days, never in a bad mood, and genuinely kind and considerate. Graylan was a great athlete and student who cared deeply for others, often befriending those who were alone or mistreated, and having no tolerance for bullying. He is described as "a walking bright light of joy".
  • Graylan's Ultimate Gift: Organ Donation: Immediately after Graylan was declared brain dead, his parents, Gary and Krista, considered organ donation. They soon learned that Graylan had already made the decision to be an organ donor when renewing his driver's license at 18, understanding how his tissues and organs could help others. This decision, made by Graylan himself, significantly eased the family's burden. His selfless act has since saved multiple lives and significantly bettered many more, embodying his spirit of helping people. Organ donation is highlighted as the "ultimate gift".
  • The Graylan Spring Foundation: In honor of Graylan's passion for D1 college football at Stephen F. Austin (SFA), Krista and Gary established the Grayland Spring Foundation.
    • Mission: To keep Graylan's memory alive by helping those walking in his footsteps.
    • Key Initiatives:
      • An endowment scholarship at SFA, including the "Graylan Spring Live like Graylan award" for a student athlete.

    • Focus on Organ Donation Awareness in Austin: Krista discovered a lack of organ donation resources in the Austin area compared to Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. A core mission of the foundation is now to educate and encourage everyone to become an organ donor.
    • Dream Project: Krista envisions creating "Graylan's Place", a house near the new UT hospital downtown's abdominal transplant wing in Austin. This facility would offer rehab, accommodation, resources, and counseling for organ donors, recipients, and their families.

Welcome to No Options, hosted by Ty Gipson, where life's toughest trials become the foundation for your greatest triumphs. In this powerful episode, Ty is joined by his wife of 21 years, Crystal Gipson, to share the untold, unique parts of their story, highlighting how the "no options" approach has defined their journey together.

Episode Highlights:

  • Building a Business with No Options to Fail: Ty and Crystal dive into the early days of their marriage and business venture. They made the bold decision to both quit their corporate jobs and commit 200% to their new business, embracing a "no options to fail" mindset. Crystal, initially worried, played a crucial "behind the scenes" role, providing the "brains" and making things happen, contrasting with Ty's front-facing strengths. They discuss learning to navigate working together, prioritizing, and maintaining a work-life balance by stopping business talk when they crossed their neighborhood's brick entrance.
  • Navigating Hidden Health Crises: Throughout their business journey, Ty faced various health challenges, including quick hospital stays. They deliberately kept the details of Ty's health struggles private from clients and the public to prevent it from affecting their business, presenting a brave face even when things were scary.
  • The Onset of Kidney Failure and Dialysis: In 2018, Ty's kidney function began to decline, leading to a major hospital stay in May 2019 where doctors confirmed his kidneys were no longer functioning adequately for daily life. This marked a somber moment, as Ty had dodged dialysis multiple times before, but now it was unavoidable. This health crisis solidified their "no options" mindset, leading them to tackle dialysis as the next necessary step rather than giving up. Ty underwent dialysis three days a week, from early morning until late morning, continuing to run the business with staff support.
  • The Unexpected Transplant Journey: The couple immediately got Ty on the transplant list, initially believing that Ty's sister or brother, who had been matches for a previous transplant, would be viable donors again. They soon discovered that it's highly unlikely for a second family member to donate due to the recipient's body building antibodies against that particular DNA. In a surprising turn, Crystal decided to get tested, thinking she was a different blood type (A positive) and aiming for a paired donation. After extensive testing and psychological evaluations (done separately from Ty to prevent coercion), she was informed she was a perfect match, an O blood type. Crystal attributes this to divine intervention, stating, "God changed my blood type," a moment of profound faith for them.
  • The New Year's Eve Transplant and Recovery: Crystal and Ty underwent the kidney transplant on New Year's Eve 2019, with everything going perfectly. As the donor, Crystal was treated "like a queen" in the hospital's presidential suite, while Ty was in a separate, quarantined area for transplant recipients. Crystal describes the surprising post-surgery experience of feeling similar to how Ty had felt before the transplant, with significantly reduced energy, as her kidney function adjusted.
  • Post-Transplant Care and COVID-19 Impact: After about a month in the hospital, they moved to Nora's Home, a specialized, germ-free environment for transplant patients near the hospital, for further recovery and daily testing. Ty's mother played a vital role, acting as a caretaker for both Crystal and Ty, cooking meals and handling groceries, as Crystal was also recovering from major surgery. This period coincided with the onset of COVID-19, which provided unexpected extra recovery time but also presented challenges with Ty's compromised immune system and their daughter being at home.
  • Resilience and Life Lessons: Crystal juggled business responsibilities (with staff stepping up to run things), caretaking for Ty, being a mother, and a wife during this intense period. She emphasizes the importance of pushing forward during a crisis, putting worries "in a box" to be dealt with later, especially in a life-or-death scenario like dialysis. They aimed to set an example for their daughters about perseverance. The Gipsons believe that challenges, though hard, are critical for growth, teaching lessons, and providing stories to help others.
  • Gratitude and the Enduring "No Options" Legacy: Ty expresses immense gratitude to Crystal, calling her the "silent weapon" behind his "no options" approach and acknowledging that he can never truly repay her for giving him life. They continue to apply their positive, "tackle the problem" mindset, which has enabled them to achieve an exit strategy for their business and move into a new phase of life.
