Calallen Softball Coaches Show - Episode Notes

Coach Teresa Lentz joined host, Chris Doelle in the show to discuss the exciting recent playoff series and the upcoming one.
Fredericksburg Playoff Series Recap:
Game 1: Calallen lost 2-0. Both teams had some of the best pitchers in the region, throwing 65+ mph with movement. Hitters were adjusting. Calallen felt the loss came down to needing better execution of "short game things" and "playing catch".
Adjustments: After Game 1, the team analyzed the opponent's pitching and focused on being patient at the plate, only swinging at pitches they wanted. This was a "huge difference".
Game 2: A dominant 15-0 win. Fredericksburg pitched their number two pitcher. Calallen's girls "jumped on her so bad," scoring seven runs in the first inning. The Game 1 loss "woke us up a little bit".
Game 2 Standouts: Pitcher Bianca Gonzalez threw "amazing" (4 strikeouts, 1 hit). Adrina, BB, and Kadenho hit home runs. BB had two triples, and Kylie Butcher had a triple. Several girls went three for four. Coach Teresa was proud of the girls' bounce back.
Game 3: An exciting, "mental battle" in the heat. BB started with a lead-off double. Jordan pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits and recording 13 strikeouts.
Game-Changing Moment (Game 3): In the seventh inning, with the score potentially close, Brooklyn Matters hit a "monster" home run that provided "breathing room" and seemed to "take the wind out of their sail".
Overall: Calallen won the series. Coach Teresa was proud of how the team adjusted and "got more locked in and better". She believes this series helped prepare them.
Preview of the Upcoming Liberty Series:
Opponent: Calallen faces Liberty. This is an unexpected matchup due to district realignment.
History: Calallen lost to Liberty 4-1 earlier in the season.
Liberty's Recent Performance: They are a "great team", and have only given up two runs in their last three playoff games.
Calallen's Perceived Advantage: Calallen has experience playing a series, while Liberty has only played one game per round in the playoffs. Facing strong pitching in the previous series helps Calallen prepare.
Significance: This is a "big one," potentially featuring one of the best teams in 4A. They are glad it's a three-game series to determine the best team.
Team Mindset: The girls seem focused, excited, and working hard. They understand what's at stake and feel prepared.
Series Logistics:
Format: This is the first time playing a series in a state round, requiring the team to set things up themselves.
Schedule & Location: The three-game series is Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday in Kyle.
Travel: Due to graduation on Thursday, Calallen must travel back and forth between games, which isn't ideal but preferred over playing back-to-back games on a Saturday.
Home/Away: They will alternate, Calallen home Wednesday, Liberty home Friday, flip for Saturday if needed.
Timing: Playing the first game on Wednesday feels "quick" and "a little weird".
Conclusion: Both Coach Teresa Lentz and Chris anticipate a competitive series

Episode: Coach Teresa Lentz on Needville Win and Davenport Preview

Welcome to the Calallen Softball Coaches Show! In this episode, host Chris Doelle talks with Coach Teresa Lentz about the recent playoff series and the upcoming challenge.

Needville Series Recap

Coach Lentz is feeling good and excited after the team's performance in the last round. They secured a solid win against Needville, taking both games with scores of 7-2.

  • Game 1 (Friday night): Played at home with a great crowd. Needville initially took a two-run lead. Coach was proud of the girls for staying in control despite Needville's speed and power. The team scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead, added two more runs, and then two extra runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.
    • Key Player Performances (Game 1):
      • Jordan: Pitched, had six strikeouts, and allowed only five hits against a tough hitting team. Also hit a home run.
      • Chris: Made two awesome sliding catches in the outfield.
      • Brooklyn Meador  : Went two for four. Also hit off the wall.
      • Kylie Butcher: Had two RBIs and went two for three. Also hit a home run.
      • BB: Went two for three with stolen bases. Also hit off the wall.
      • Adrina: Had two walks as Needville seemed to avoid pitching to her.
      • Kaden: Got a nice hit off the wall.
      • Kiana Vargas: Hit a home run.
    • The team displayed high intensity and focus, hitting the ball hard, described as "intimidating". They saw all three of Needville's pitchers.
  • Game 2: Played in a different setting and field, but resulted in the exact same score, 7-2. Calallen started differently, scoring two runs in the first inning.
    • Key Player Performances (Game 2):
      • Bianca (pitcher): Was on fire, with her pitches being very difficult for Needville to hit. She shut them down for four innings, striking them out frequently. She finished with six strikeouts and kept Needville off balance. She also reached a significant milestone, potentially her 600th or 700th strikeout.
      • BB: Went four for two (likely meaning four hits or four plate appearances, two hits based on game 1 performance) with one RBI.
      • Audrina: Had two RBIs.
      • Kiana: Had an RBI.
      • Brooklyn: Went three for four with an RBI.
    • There were no home runs in Game 2, potentially due to wind blowing in, but the girls were still hitting the ball hard. The team had 11 hits. Needville's freshman starter pitched the entire game. The Calallen girls didn't ease up even after Needville scored runs in the fifth, adding two or three more runs to secure the win.

Health Update

The team is mostly in good health. However, there is concern for Lizzie Smith, one of the team's fastest players who excels in the outfield and on the bases. She might have a torn hip or labrum, potentially related to her high jump participation. The team is hoping for good news from the doctor and that she only needs rehab rather than surgery, though the potential injury does hurt the team slightly.

Upcoming Game: Regional Quarterfinal vs. Davenport

The next opponent is Davenport, and Coach notes that at this stage of the playoffs, no team is a pushover. Calallen needs to focus on playing their game.

  • Davenport's Pitcher: Throws in the mid-50s with significant movement, a tight spin, and stays away with a curve or drop curve, also mixing speeds. She hits her spots, which could challenge Calallen's lineup.
  • Keys to Victory: Putting the ball in play with runners in scoring position, executing, making routine defensive plays, and the pitchers hitting their spots. Coach emphasizes the need to focus as nothing is guaranteed in the playoffs.
  • Game Details:
    • Location: Three Rivers High School (a middle ground site).
    • Field: Turf field (the team hasn't played there before).
    • Format: A one-game series.
    • Visitor Status: Calallen will be the visitor after losing the flip.
    • Date and Time: Friday at 6:30 PM.
    • Significance: This is the regional quarterfinal, a crucial game to advance to the regional final.

Playoff Series Format Discussion

The decision on whether to play a one-game or three-game series in the playoffs is determined by a flip (odd or even) between the teams. This can happen all the way up until the state championship game. Previously, this option was only available up to the state semi-final, but now the state semi-final can also be a series for the first time. While most teams often prefer a one-game series depending on their strategy, Coach Lentz noted that regardless of the format, the team still needs to win and "beat the best" to advance.

Coach Lentz is excited for the upcoming game and appreciates the support.

🗓️ Episode Title: District Champs, Deeper Purpose & A Tough Round Two Ahead

In this heartfelt and high-energy episode of The Calallen Softball Coaches Show, host Chris Doelle sits down with Coach Teresa Lentz to celebrate a dominant bi-district championship, preview the upcoming playoff battle against Needville, and shine a spotlight on the team’s bigger mission this season.

🥎 Episode Highlights:

✅ Bi-District Champions!
Calallen rolled to a 15-0 win in the opening round of the playoffs, fueled by red-hot offense and lockdown pitching.

  • Bianca tossed a one-hitter while navigating the game without her regular pitching coach.
  • Offensive standouts: Butcher (home run), BB and Brooklyn (triples), and freshman Annabelle (two stolen bases in her debut).
  • The team played error-free defense and brought high energy from the first pitch.

✅ Playoffs with Purpose
The team is playing for more than just wins this year.
Coach Lentz shares the emotional story of Emma, a young girl who inspired the team during last year’s state run.

  • In her honor, players now twirl after home runs—a nod to Emma’s joyful spirit.
  • Fundraising t-shirts are available to support Emma’s mother’s mission: bringing birthday gifts to children in the cancer unit at Driscoll Children’s Hospital on what would be Emma’s birthday, May 25.
  • Last year raised $1,200—Coach Lentz hopes to beat that this year.

  • Game 2 (and 3, if needed): Saturday starting at 2 PM at Sweeny High School

Jordan Thibodeaux pitched a perfect game with 14 strikeouts, achieving her 500th career strikeout. Kaylee Lopez and BB both hit home runs. Against Zapata, the Wildcats won 10-0. Bianca pitched her first game back from injury and performed well. Kiana Vargas hit a walk-off home run, and Audrina also had a significant hit with runners on base.

Looking ahead, Coach Lentz emphasized the importance of tonight's game against Robstown, who are their closest competitor in district play. Winning this game would clinch the district title. She acknowledged that Robstown is a tough opponent and the team needs to be prepared and adjust.

Coach Lentz expressed her gratitude for the parents' support, particularly those involved in the booster club. She specifically thanked several parents for their contributions to the program. She noted the positive shift towards parents supporting all the girls on the team.

Coach Lentz shared her perspective on the team's perception, stating she doesn't view them as an "empire" but acknowledges that opponents likely bring their best game against them, which Calallen welcomes as it helps them improve. They want to earn their success and do not shy away from competition.

Finally, Coach Lentz provided a health update, noting a few minor issues but overall good health. Several talented players are participating in area track, with some potentially moving on to regionals and state. Lizzy Smith is advancing to area for High Jump, and Audrina Almaraz and Brooklyn Meador are moving on in Shot Put and Discus (though the specific events weren't certain). The focus is on maintaining health as they approach the playoffs.
